Openwave Mobility ‘Go Mobile’ for Northern Ireland’s Leading Care Charity

– Openwave team raises £3652.44 for Northern Ireland Hospice’s ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign –

BELFAST, UK, May 11th 2013. A 20-strong team from one of Northern Ireland’s (NI) leading software companies, Openwave Mobility, has ‘gone the extra mile’ for caring charity NI Hospice as part of a 100km cycle ride.

Departing from Belfast Harlequins Rugby Club, the charity cycle – which took place on Saturday May 11 – saw team members tackle a 100km course covering Dunmurry, Lisburn, Lurgan, Crumlin and Nutt’s Corner and a shorter 50km return route to Moira.

The charity effort was in support of the NI Hospice’s ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign which aims to help fund the rebuild of a new hospice at Somerton Road, Belfast. The planned facility will offer 18 specialist palliative care beds and enhanced education and research facilities.

Event organiser and Openwave Mobility Senior Strategist at Belfast, Michael Rodgers, said: “We are very pleased to support Northern Ireland Hospice in the important work that they do for our local community. The hospice aims to bring in £3 million in public donations through the ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign and we’re delighted to have been able to make a small contribution towards that goal. There are some sore legs at the moment but it’s great to be supporting such a worthwhile cause.

Openwave Mobility’s UK engineering facility employs over 100 people in Belfast and although the company is based in California, this is the company’s largest site worldwide. Engineers here support the company in delivering more than 40 billion daily transactions to over half-a-billion mobile phone users all over the world.

Northern Ireland Hospice, which cares for over 3,000 adults, children and young people living in the shadow of a terminal illness, is in urgent need of a new building. The full cost of the redevelopment scheme to deliver a new, bespoke hospice on the Somerton site is £11 million. Funds will be secured from a number of streams but £3 million is needed from public donations to meet the overall target.

Ellen Hillen, Corporate Fundraising Manager, of Northern Ireland Hospice, said: “The ‘Buy a Brick’ appeal is capturing the hearts and minds of the public and we have been overwhelmed with the response. The spirit of team work and the generosity of staff at Openwave Mobility will go a long way in helping us meet our £3 million fundraising target. We are grateful to everyone from local people, communities and corporate organisations such as Openwave Mobility for their support. Each donation brings us a step closer to making the vision of building a new hospice a reality.
