Learn about 5G timing & data management strategies in a changing world – New Microcast on May 14

Time to read: 2 minutes

Will it happen? More than a third of mobile operators globally revealed in a survey that they will begin deploying 5G standalone (SA) within the next two years…Well, that was before the coronavirus lockdown turned the world upside down. Have mobile operators changed their 5G plans? Join a Microcast featuring Telefonica and Strategy Analytics on May 14 to find out.

Telefonica’s Diego R. López, Senior Technology Expert, CTO’s office and Chair of the ETSI Industry Specification Group on NFV, and Strategy Analytics’ Sue Rudd, Director of Networks and Service Platforms, will examine operator 5G strategies, mobile edge deployments and the role of common network data layer. They will also discuss the key drivers and timing for 5G deployment.

5G deployment and transformation

The worldwide mobile operator survey on 5G data management features input from 41 mobile operators worldwide.  During the Microcast, Lopez and Rudd also will discuss the implications for 5G from current crisis. The survey results showed that 27 percent of operators plan to deploy 5G SA within 12-18 months, and another 10 percent within two years. These results underscore the fact that operators see a clear path to 5G SA infrastructure.

The microcast also will delve into the fact that 85 percent of operators in the survey said they’re planning edge deployments, yet more than half of those admit they have no strategy for doing so. A third of operators say they will deploy edge solutions to support use cases, which also will be explored by Rudd and Lopez.

Additionally, the microcast will explore how operators plan to deploy a network data layer, which serves as a single point of storage for all data about subscriptions, network services, devices and connections in a 5G network.  According to the global survey, more than 50 percent of operators plan to move to a common network data layer across their network functions as operators move to 5G from 4G.

The microcast also will examine some of the key drivers for 5G transformation as operators migrate from 4G and the dramatic impact it will have on infrastructure, including whether the delay of 3GPP Release #16 affects anything.

Hear about the top reasons that operators are moving to a network data layer, including the ability to deploy in slices or at the edge; gaining a unified view of customer data; and being able to monetize subscriber data – all in 15 mins!

Bite-sized thought leadership

The Mobile Video Industry Council Microcast series provide short 15-minute videos that feature thought leaders and commentators who examine a range of mobile operator challenges and market opportunities.

On June 11, join AT&T and Analysys Mason for the fifth microcast episode that will look at 5G cloud gaming, mobile identity and the edge. It’s easy to register once and watch it anytime, anywhere. Attendees receive an executive summary, including data and charts from the microcast, along with a concise write up of the opinions of the analysts within 24 hours of the event.

Previous microcasts have looked at how operators are managing the network during the Coronavirus crisis, mobile operator benchmarking reports and the impact of cloud gaming on mobile networks.
